Best known for his memory artwork, Lumbers is also an accomplished portrait and wildlife artist. Once graduating from The Ontario College of Art, Lumbers labored for a number of years in Toronto. In 1969 a chance came to travel to the remote north to paint polar bears in their normal habitat with a group of scientists. In the subsequent 10 years, his theme matter expanded to documenting Native Peoples of the North.This composition was displayed in 2 shows at the Royal Ontario Museum.

During the late 70’s he was accepted as one of Canada’s foremost realist painters. Various exhibitions of his collections followed across the nation and into the United States. Via his unique approach, Lumbers has painted several of the worlds distinguished Sports Heroes, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretsky and Joe Montana. He also captured John Diefenbaker, Chief Dan George, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Andrew Davis with The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and numerous others from numorous walks of life.
